I’m migrating over from WordPress.com to Substack (here)
I’ve seen some noodling, self-regarding posts about why people have chosen to do just this, but for me it comes down to two things:
- WordPress.com is not a safe platform for dissenting voices. My blog could be hosed away tomorrow by an algorithm written by an intern. It looks for now like there’s less chance of that happening there than here.
- I thought about self-hosting, but that option is very far from free if you want uptime and security. I thought about paying a hosting provider, but… pay? For something that could be taken from me tomorrow by a blue-haired landwhale in San Francisco? Nah, mate. I’ll pass.
So there we will be. I’ll probably dual-post for a little while, but if I get to five posts there, you can consider it a done deal. I’ll have a go at migrating some of my old stuff over – at least the last few years or so. Archive.org will have to take care of the rest.
Posting will doubtless be as sporadic, vituperative and curiously worded as it always was. I’ve no idea right now whether anything about that platform will persuade me to change the formula. but I wouldn’t bet on it if I were you.
