David Cameron: The Gimp That Keeps On Giving

I noted this in his speech yesterday:

“Giving people control over their lives.”

“We need to give people a sense that being a citizen of Britain is not just about paying your taxes and obeying the law. It’s about being part of something bigger than yourself.”

He’s at it again today.

“We really do believe in giving schools more freedom and control over their own affairs.”

This is an important semantic point. You see, Dave, you can’t give us anything that belonged to us in the first place. You can only return to us what was previously taken by force or coercion.

Perhaps you also propose ‘giving’ the Elgin Marbles to Greece. Or ‘giving’ Ulster to the Irish.

Any time any politician talks of giving or allowing anything, you instantly know that he’s a statist authoritarian, whether he’s red, green, yellow or blue.
