The BBC is reporting

A former MP who had a conviction for harassment overturned on appeal is demanding her DNA, taken at her arrest, is removed from the national database. Helen Clark represented Peterborough between 1997 and 2005. She was arrested after a row with staff at the city’s Great Northern Hotel in June 2008. The ex-teacher received a conditional discharge in March, which she said stopped her from working with children.

What they don’t report is that she’s an ex-Labour MP who explicitly supported the legislation that allowed DNA retention as it passed through the House of Commons. She said

The first issue is DNA samples and fingerprinting. As we know, forensic science is, rightly, growing in importance in the fight against crime: in convicting or, it should be stressed, in exonerating an individual accused of a crime. The advance in the science and technology of DNA will make it more useful to the police, provided they have the powers to make optimum use of it.

I have absolutely no sympathy for her current plight as she had the chance to prevent this from happening but never thought she’d be on the receiving end. Welcome Helen to the world you helped create you ignorant, arrogant cunt.

Mummylonglegs has spun an excellent piece of work, picking up on Nick Griffin’s shrewd and laudably cheeky move of getting to represent the EU at the Copenhagen Climate Change talks, from an Anti-AGW position.

The reason it’s shrewd is that in the wake of #Climategate, the Anti-AGW bandwagon is just now starting to pick up members of the general apolitical public, who are realising they’ve been had (again!) and none of the other politicians are willing to stand up and say what so very many of us are thinking on the topic of AGW.

I was drafting a piece about the RSPCA earlier, and in researching it, came across this blog http://rspcainjustice.blogspot.com/

A few pages back in this most enlightening blog, I found this – how your children can be whisked away in the blink of an eye, and held onto against all reason, logic and humanity, then put up for adoption on utterly specious grounds:

The recording begins with the sound of a child’s voice. It belongs to a little girl and she is clearly bewildered and distressed.

At one point she begins to cry. At other times she is sobbing uncontrollably. ‘Have you seen the judge yet?’ she can be heard asking pitifully in between the tears before pleading: ‘I want to go home with [you] Mummy and Daddy.’

The recording – and dozens of others just like it – was made during a supervised meeting between the youngster and her parents after their daughter was taken away from them by social workers.

They are known as ‘contact visits’ in the soulless vernacular of the care system, and took place in a room with a table and chairs and a few toys.

One hour. Once a month. That’s the extent of the relationship now between this little seven-year-old girl and her traumatised parents.

There are some parents who do not deserve to see their children more than once a month. Irresponsible parents. Neglectful parents. Abusive parents.

According to care workers, the mother and father of this little girl were found to fall into this category after their home was raided by the RSPCA and at least 18 police officers to deal with a complaint about supposed mistreatment of dogs.

But what if social workers have got it wrong? In the light of Baby P and so many other scandals, it’s hardly impossible is it?

Certainly, the recordings stored on a computer at! the family’s home on the South Coast seem to contradict the damaging claims by social services that the girl, whom we shall call Jenny – the girl’s real identity has been suppressed by the courts – did not wish to return to live with her parents.

Jenny’s father spent months taking down every word of the recordings by hand, only to be told by a judge that they had to be professionally transcribed.

By the time they were, it was too late. Moves to put Jenny up for adoption were under way.
This week, after 74 separate court hearings over two harrowing years, the family finally lost their fight to have Jenny returned to them.

The Court of Appeal in London ruled that their daughter must be given up for adoption. If and when she is, they may never see her again.

Gary Ashworth, who lives in Hambleden, said: "If I was a BT shareholder I’d be upset… I think one can live with it, if it’s a level playing field it’s not a problem.

"It’s this preferential treatment that Sir Michael Rake has had that’s upset most of the villagers."

BT said Sir Michael Rake’s connection was part of a trial of new technology, and no company could afford to provide broadband to the area.

In a statement, BT wrote: "Trials of new technologies are often conducted among a company’s own staff so there is nothing unusual in this situation.

"BT has learnt a lot through the trial the chairman participated in and hopefully those lessons will benefit the residents of Hambleden in due course.

And there we have it.

If I was living in this village-of-the-damned, I’d be delighted that the one man who can truly make it happen is pressing ahead with developing technology that would mean soon I can have broadband too, instead of leaving this ludicrous backwater in search of civilisation, like anyone with a clue would have done years ago.

A most interesting observation from ConservativeHome’s Leftwatch section.

At 0853am this morning the Today programme interviewed Katherine Rake of the Family and Parenting Institute. She used her three minute twenty second slot to attack the Tory idea that marriage should be recognised by the tax system. She avoided a question about the evidence that shows marriage is much more stable than cohabitation and continued her political talking points.

She was presented as an independent expert on family policy but who is she and what is the Family and Parenting institute?

Katherine Rake was until recently a very regular contributor to The Guardian and ran the Fawcett Society.  In a profile to mark her departure from seven years of running the Fawcett Society, she was described by The Guardian as "Feminism’s calm champion".

The Family and Parenting Institute is nearly entirely funded by the taxpayer.  In 2008/9 £9.5m of the Institute’s income of £11.8m came from the Department of Children, Schools and Families via the Parenting Fund.

Wait… I say it was an interesting observation because… err.. I made it 8 days ago.

Though, in fairness, I didn’t realise that:

Well, it’s a bit fucking late and it’s more than a bit opportunistic, as the BNP look set to win seats in the next parliament. While I have no love of the BNP, them winning representation in Parliament, having already succeeded at the local and EU level, would be just the rocket-up-the-arse needed to smash the cosy consensus that hangs millions of indigenous Brits out to dry.

The Labour awakening does appear to be coordinated, too, which makes it all the more opportunistic and all the less of a genuine epiphany. In fact, it’s nothing less than tacit acknowledgement that Labour has consciously taken their core voters for granted and treated their views and concerns with disdain for 13 years.

We have something called a John Denham.

We have Tom Harris, who mentions others in the coterie.

COI reveals new five step plan for behaviour change

A new five step process for behaviour change communications planning is at the heart of new guidance from the Central Office of Information (COI). It also recommends a practical behavioural model to be defined at the start of any new behaviour change initiative, and refined throughout the life of the campaign. These measures will help maximise the effectiveness of – and define the role for – government marketing activity on integrated behaviour change campaigns.

To be honest, it’s annoying, but it’s not dynamite. The principles outlined therein – NLP, systems thinking, nudging (as the Tories know it) are all established.

What is insidious is that the government actively embraces them.

What is chilling is the purposes they deploy these techniques for and the sense they have that it is their duty to do so.

I’m quite positive the Tories will take these ideas forward aggressively, too.
